A father of two, Ken says that his biggest weight-loss challenge was
changing his eating habits and sticking to it. He would typically have three or
four bowls of cereal, a bagel with cream cheese and soda for breakfast. Lunch
was a burger and fries, and dinner would consist of pizza at least twice a
week. Besides the greasy fast food, Ken feasted on many between-meal snacks,
too: candy bars, chips and lots and lots of non-diet soda. He was embarrassed
by the way he looked and the food that he ate always left him with a heavy,
greasy feeling that would stay with him all day. Plagued by constant fatigue
and difficulty sleeping, his problems affected his health and his job. Since
losing the weight, Ken no longer has trouble sleeping and has the energy to do
things with his children that he thought he would never be able to do, such as
playing basketball, bike riding and going for walks. He is fan of Subway’s
6-inch ham sub on wheat with mustard, pickles, tomatoes and banana peppers, a
bag of baked chips and a diet beverage for his lunchtime meal. Ken would
alternate between that and turkey on the three or four evenings that he would
have Subway sandwiches for dinner. Ken says that he didn’t change what he ate
at home, just the type of food and the amounts, opting for lower-fat meat and
dairy products, eliminating cheese and choosing vegetables over fries. He uses
low-fat and low-sugar spaghetti sauces, bakes or grills chicken, chooses
smaller portions. and favors diet beverages. Ken writes, "One thing I did was
to get myself totally off of regular soda. I have either diet soda or water
with my meals now." Upbeat about his success, Ken adds, "Two years ago, I
thought it was impossible for me to ever lose weight. No, not me. No can do. I
don’t think that I would have lost all this weight without Subway. I tell
anyone who thinks they can’t do it, that if I can do it, anyone can."
